LP SmartSide is not real wood — it's engineered from wood strands bonded with adhesives and treated through LP's proprietary SmartGuard® process: resins, waxes, and zinc borate infused throughout the substrate. The result is a panel that looks and works like wood but resists the moisture, rot, and insects that destroy traditional wood siding.
Saratoga Springs crosses the 32°F threshold roughly 70+ times per year — each cycle is a stress test. LP SmartSide is dimensionally stable through these swings in ways that real wood and lower-grade vinyl at sub-zero temps simply are not.
Heavy snow loads combined with under-insulated attics on older Saratoga homes create persistent ice dams. Siding adjacent to gutter lines takes the worst of it. LP SmartSide's moisture resistance prevents water infiltration at these vulnerable zones.
Persistent winter wind — particularly on east-facing elevations and Saratoga Lake-side properties — drives rain and snowmelt into siding seams. LP SmartSide's treated substrate resists moisture at seams and trim interfaces.

Herman Exterior Homes installs LP SmartSide siding across Saratoga Springs and the surrounding Capital Region from our headquarters in Schenectady. Our team handles everything from permit coordination to full exterior project execution, including homes within Saratoga’s historic districts and newer HOA-governed developments.
Get Everlast TodayRanch homes, split-levels, and Cape Cods built in the 1950s–70s are LP SmartSide's natural fit. No Design Review Commission (DRC) oversight applies in Geyser Crest — no application package, no 3-week submission window, no material-approval risk.
Folk Victorian cottages and vernacular Queen Annes built 1880s–1910s are strong LP SmartSide candidates when original wood clapboard has aged past cost-effective repair. Much of the West Side falls outside the strictest DRC historic overlay, giving homeowners real material flexibility. LP SmartSide's horizontal lap profiles read correctly on these homes while offering a 50-year performance window that tired original wood cannot match.
Lakeside and converted cottage properties carry elevated wind and moisture exposure year-round. LP SmartSide's moisture resistance makes it one of the better performers here. It installs in both horizontal lap and vertical panel profiles — accommodating the board-and-batten and shake styles common on Saratoga Lake properties.
LP SmartSide is not automatically approved for contributing structures in these districts. The DRC evaluates against the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation, which generally favor in-kind wood replacement on original wood-clad buildings. However:
It depends on the property's designation and the condition of the existing siding. LP SmartSide can receive DRC approval on contributing structures when original wood is documented as beyond repair and the new product's profile and reveal match the original closely.
LP SmartSide's SmartGuard® treatment — zinc borate, resins, and waxes — gives the substrate dimensional stability through these cycles and moisture resistance at seams, edges, and trim. Real-world performance in northeastern climates this demanding has been strong: no peeling, no buckling, no rot on properly installed systems.
LP SmartSide ships factory-primed and is designed to be finish-painted at installation. The primed surface holds paint well, and a full repaint every 10–15 years keeps the system warrantied and looking sharp.
LP backs SmartSide with a 50-year limited warranty covering both panels and trim. Properly installed and maintained systems in harsh northeastern climates have performed well over decades of service.
